Why Switch Genres?

Ever just want to do something different from what you're used to doing? I guess that's why I did a one-eighty. From contemporary romantic suspense to erotic western historical. Actually I was trying to write a short story and it ended up a little on the long side (45k words, instead of under 15k). I discovered I really enjoyed writing about another time, even if I know NOTHING about horses, except they're bigger than I am and the only time I rode one, it wouldn't do anything I asked it.

But I have a history with the western heroes of yesterday. At the early age of five, I fell head over heels in love with Roy Rogers. I was living in Phoenix at the time and it only took one wonderful evening at the drive-in--it was a match made in Heaven. I dreamed about him night after night--and little did I know that my mother, back in the day, thought he was pretty hot, too.

I used to know all the movie cowboys and their horses: Hopalong Cassidy, Lash Larue, Gene Autry, Kit Carson, then there were the Saturday morning TV shows: Rin Tin Tin, Annie Oakley, Buffalo Bill, and Kit Carson--I even met him at the local theatre and had his autograph.
So I guess changing genres isn't so weird after all. There's plenty of room for shoot outs and bad guys, so that makes the suspense side of me happy.
Oh, and I absolutely loved Deadwood when it was on HBO. Now that was really the wild, wild West.

Marie-Nicole, I have no problem at all seeing the connection between these 2 genres. As a young (impressionable) gal I watched Bonanza (Adam - dark, dangerous) was my fave. I had a huge crush on William Smith (ibid dangerous) from The Texas Rangers. And some of my favorite movies were westerns, too - The Magnificent Seven (I vacillated between Steve McQueen, Horst Bucholz and Charles Bronson - but not surprising, as I now write menage!!!). And a great romantic film was Westward the Women - Robert Taylor and Denise Darcel. LOVED IT! So I can easily see the leap from a tall drink of water in worn jeans, and a bent hat as he climbs aboard, uh, his horse, I meant, and squints down at the lady love of his life and says, "Keep that bed warm for me, darlin'. I'll be back."

Oh, and how could I forget BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID! Mmmm. Robert Redford ..... be still my quivering thighs!

I'm amazed to find this comment. Sorry I'm so late in answering. For someone unknown reason, Blogger didn't notify me like it usually does.

Now that this first one is behind me, I'm looking forward to writing the next one.
